![]() ![]() What I do know from an entirely subjective view, then, is that when we I first met Dolly, I was in a hideous closeted relationship with quite literally the worst woman on campus. I know it’s impossible for me to give anything like an objective view - when reading, I can recognise anecdotes of Dolly’s she’s woven in here and there, I can see which way her cogs have been whirring these past few years. ![]() Happy publication week to the smart and witty Dolly Alderton, whose debut book is a gloves-off approach to: heterosexual dating in the fourth decade, conjuring entire people out of our projections, and dementia, something I’ve sadly seen in too many close family members. Enjoy some of those things, starting with this house that, if it makes you feel any better, faces onto a really busy road that is nigh on impossible to cross. I’ve had some time between to enjoy things and doom-scroll and spend about four hours per week on Rightmove, imagining a fantasy life where smeary grey days of rain are no longer accompanied by the sound of my neighbour heaving and coughing, or the other neighbours clattering their doors or the other neighbour singing showtunes or the people below blasting out John Mayer, but just the tap-tap of me thumbing my way around Rightmove, a place where we grimace at floorpans and pelmets as if that £2.4m townhouse fancied us anyway. ![]() And then suddenly everything’s on my plate. Not even a thinly veiled request for free work from a bold American who can’t even plop a “please” into the effusive demand, not a speck of a press release, not even a Google Alert about an incredibly broad term e.g. Two days of twiddling thumbs, wondering if getting to inbox zero would tempt fate and lead me to a permanently deserted professional life, with nothing from no-one, not even a phishing email from a web developer called Zak who can optimise the SEO of my site. And then I’m careering from one extreme to the other. Hiya! I feel as if during the pandemic, people are either working harder than ever, or not working at all. ![]()
